The auger must be primed to allow pellets to travel through the length of the auger, and fill the Burn Pot. If not primed, the igniter will timeout before the pellets are ignited, and no fire will start.

FAQs

What p setting gives the most smoke? ›

Raising the P-setting to P-5, P-6, or P-7 increases the pause time for the auger. It will lower the temperature of the Smoke setting and can create more smoke since the pellets will smolder longer before another batch of pellets feeds in and the fire reignites.

What Pit Boss model do I have? ›

The serial and model number of your Pit Boss can be found in two different places, one on the back of the hopper on the rating label, in the design box. Two more on the sipping box, both front panels, in an open space near the UPC. Record numbers below as the label may become worn or illegible.

What is the S setting on Pit Boss? ›

With a Pit Boss, you simply adjust your grill to the “smoke” setting, which will have you cooking at the optimal temperature for consistent smoke. To properly smoke on your pellet grill, you don't want to go beyond 250°F.

What is the best temp for maximum smoke? ›

To get the best out of your smoker, the temperature should be between 225 and 250 °F (107 and 121 °C). Ensure you confirm the internal temperature of the food until you are sure it's done. Don't consume meat that's below 145 °F (63 °C) for safety reasons.

What temperature produces the most smoke? ›

Setting your grill between 160º and 225º F will produce the largest amount of smoke, and is thus where we traditionally consider food smoked.

Is Pit Boss better than Traeger? ›

If you're looking for the biggest cooking area, Pit Boss is the way to go; if you need something in the middle range, one of Traeger's pellet grills is more likely to meet your exact needs. But because we can't account for your desired amount of cooking space, Pit Boss gets the nod on maximum area.

What does the P stand for on Pit Boss? ›

P is for pause. The higher the number, the longer the auger pauses. At P0 it turns on for 18 seconds and then off for 55 seconds. Every 1 higher P adds 15 seconds to the pause time so P2 is 70 seconds P3 is 85 seconds and so on.

What p setting for cold weather? ›

Grills have 5 P-Settings: P-1 to P-5, the default setting being P-2. The lower the P-Setting, the shorter the pause; the higher the P-Setting, the longer the pause. A lower P-Setting is ideal for low outside temperatures because it will feed pellets faster, preventing the flame from going out.

Why is my Pit Boss getting too hot on the smoke setting? ›

Why is my Pit Boss Grill running so hot in smoke? Many factors can cause a grill to run too hot on the smoke setting, including outside temperature. Usually this happens when the grill lid is shut too soon after startup.

What does ERL mean on Pit Boss? ›

ERL is a generic error it just means Low Temperature. It could mean anything from a bad igniter to an auger feed issue. The most common thing I see is a jammed up auger. In very rare cases it could be a bad board/thermostat.

What is the best p setting for Pit Boss? ›

The default P-setting is P-4. On this setting, while using the SMOKE setting, the grill will feed pellets for 18 seconds and pause for 115 seconds. In most instances, you will want to keep the P-setting on the default. Raising the P-setting to P-5, P-6, or P-7 increases the pause time for the auger.

What color should smoker smoke be? ›

Simply put, when you're charcoal grilling, thick white smoke is bad and thin "blue" or "clear" smoke is good. A lot of beginner charcoal smokers envelope their food in thick white smoke thinking it'll give their food that delicious smoky flavour we all love - they're sadly mistaken.

What is the super smoke setting? ›

Super Smoke works at temperatures between 165°F and 225°F. This means it's well suited for low and slow cooking. Ribs, pork butt, and brisket, can all start out at this temperature with Super Smoke engaged to ensure the utmost in wood-fired flavor.

What is high smoke setting? ›

High Smoke – High smoke tended to range from 200 – 220 degrees.

What should my p setting be on my Traeger? ›

Because increasing the P-Setting increases the pause before feeding more pellets, we recommend not going above P-4 to prevent the fire from going out.
