1. Harry Potter’s Birthday – 31 July 1980
Harry Potter’s birthday is 30 July and it is one of the first birthdays that we learn in the books.
The Dursleys have retreated to a remote cabin with Harry in tow in order to avoid more letters from Hogwarts. Harry is lying awake alone wishing himself a happy birthday, when Hagrid bursts in and reveals what is really going in.
We hear about Harry’s birthday frequently, often at the start of each book to anchor us in terms of where we are in time. His date of birth also, of course, plays a role in the prophecy that cause Voldemort to mark Harry with his lightning scar.
Learn about Harry’s zodiac sign and birth chart.
2. Hermione Granger’s Birthday – 19 September 1979
Hermione’s birthday is September 19, and while not mentioned in the books, we do learn that she is older than Harry, as she and Ron are allowed to take their apparition exams earlier than him in The Half-Blood Prince. J.K.
Rowling later informed fans on the website that her birthday is 19 September.

3. Ron Weasley’s Birthday – 1 March 1980
Ron Weasley’s birthday is on March 1st. We find out about Ron’s birthday in the Half-Blood Prince as he is opening a variety of presents.
He accidentally finds a box of Chocolate Cauldrons, and eats some assuming they are for him, but these were in fact a present to Harry from Romilda Vane and spiked with love potion.
Harry takes Ron to Professor Slughorn for a cure, and to get information out of the reluctant professor.
But there, Ron imbibes a more serious poison in an oak-matured mead given to him by Professor Slughorn. Ron is saved by a bezoar, but spends the rest of his birthday in the hospital wing.
Learn about Ron’s zodiac sign and birth chart.
4. Albus Dumbledore’s Birthday – August 1881
We don’t know Dumbledore’s specific birthdate, but little clues suggest that his birthday was in late August.
In her expose on Dumbledore, Rita Skeeter says that he was nearing his 18th birthday when he left Hogwarts in June, and that he was still 17 when he met Grindelwald.
He must have turned 18 before the end of August to have qualified for his class year at Hogwarts, which means that his birthday was in late July, but more likely August.

5. Voldemort/Tom Riddle’s Birthday – 31 December 1926
Lord Voldemort is born on new year’s eve. We learn the birthday of Tom Riddle when Dumbledore shares his research into him with Harry.
He specifically says that he was told that Tom’s witch mother stumbled into a muggle orphanage on New Year’s Eve, and gave birth and died not long after.
6. Neville Longbottom’s Birthday – 30 July 1980
We know that Neville shares a birthday with Harry, 30 July because as Harry learns more about the prophecy, he is told that it could have been about either him or Neville, but that Lord Voldemort decided that it was about Harry.
It was his choice that made Harry the chosen one instead of Neville.
7. Rubeus Hagrid’s Birthday – 6 December 1928
Hagrid’s birthday is on 6th of December and is one of the events featured on Harry Potter: Hogwarts Mystery, when Dumbledore plans a surprise party for Hagrid for his 56th birthday.

Learn how they made Hagrid so bid in the Harry Potter films.
8. James Potter & Lily Potter’s Birthdays – 27 March & 30 January 1960
The year of birth for Lily and James Potter is revealed in tragic circumstances when Harry and Hermione visit their grave at Godric’s Hollow in The Deathly Hallows.
This year is very important as it tells us the year of birth of many of the characters who were their contemporaries at Hogwarts.
They were both only 21 years old when they died defending Harry. More details about their birthdates were later revealed by the author.
9. Weasley Family Birthdates
The entire Weasley family play an important role in the books and act like a second family to Harry.
While some of them are revealed in the story, most were revealed by J.K. Rowling on her website, due to popular demand.
Excluding Ron, who we have already looked at, their birthdays are the following:
- Ginny – 11 August 1981
- Fred & George – 1 April 1978
- Percy – 22 August 1976
- Bill – 29 November 1972
- Charlie – 12 December 1970
- Molly – 30 October
- Arthur – 6 February
It should come as little surprise that Rowling decided to have the troublesome twins born on April Fool’s Day.
10. Sirius Black’s Birthday – 3 November 1959
Rowling revealed Sirius Black’s birthday as November 3 on Twitter, saying that she would share it with fans if they agreed to cheer on the Scottish rugby team in an important match.

11. Draco Malfoy’s Birthday – 5 June 1980
Draco Malfoy’s birthday, 5 June, was another Twitter reveal, with Rowling taking to her favorite social media platform to wish him a happy 35th birthday back in 2015.
12. Dobby’s Birthday – 28 June
J.K. Rowling added Dobby’s birthday, June 28, to one of her websites several years ago. Significantly, this is the same date as Rowling’s sister Dianne, who is a big Dobby fan.
It seems that Rowling gave Dobby this birthdate after learning of the affinity between him and her sister, suggesting that it was not something that she had in mind when creating the character.

13. Severus Snape’s Birthday – 9 January 1960
J.K. Rowling also revealed Severus Snape’s birthday, 9 January, on Twitter when sending out a birthday message for him. She acknowledges the dual nature of the character as both a hero and a villain.
It is worth noting that Snape, James Potter, Lily, and their other contemporaries at Hogwarts should only have been 31 or 32 during the events of the first Harry Potter movie, but they are all portrayed by significantly older actors.
James and Lily Potter were only 21 when they died in the books, but the actors who play them are much older.
14. Luna Lovegood’s Birthday – 13 February 1981
Luna Lovegood’s birthday is 13 February, the day before Valentine’s day. J.K. Rowling tweeted out Luna’s birthday in response to an avid Luna fan who asked her the question on Twitter.
Rowling said that she is always happy to respond to questions posed by true fans.
15. Dudley Dursley’s Birthday – June 23rd 1980
Dudley Dursley’s birthday occurs on June 23rd, and is actually the very first Harry Potter birthday we encounter in the books.
We meet Harry as his aunt and uncle are forced to take him with them on a trip to the zoo for Dudley’s birthday in the first book. This is when we learn that Harry is a parseltongue, as he unwittingly speaks to and then frees a snake from the zoo.
We calculate Dudley’s birthday from the fact that Harry starts receiving his letters from Hogwarts on July 24 in the first book.
At the same time, he is moved into Dudley’s second bedroom. There he finds a camera that Dudley received for his birthday, which is described as broken and a month old.
We also know from the story that Dudley’s birthday in that year, 1991, fell on a Saturday, making it very likely that his date of birth is 23 June 1980.
