Is Aqueduct closing for good? ›

In December 2022 the NYRA formally announced its intention to upgrade the facilities at nearby Belmont Park to make it suitable to host year-round thoroughbred racing and training, which would ultimately lead to the closure of Aqueduct Racetrack, sometime in late 2026.

NYRA first moved the Belmont fall meet to Aqueduct this year so that tunnels could be built that would provide access to the infield. In 2023, moving the Belmont fall meet will allow for reconstruction of the three Belmont racing surfaces.

The New York Racing Association says it isn't planning on closing Aqueduct Race Track despite a report in the Aug. 29 Albany Times-Union that said the horse-racing organization's financial oversight board suggested shuttering the track to save money and the fact that area officials aren't exactly opposed to the idea.

With Empire City and Jamaica both closed in the late 1950s, the New York City area had just Aqueduct and Belmont Park, so shutting the latter permanently would hurt racing in the area. Instead, NYRA opted to raze and then rebuild Belmont Park and temporarily moved the track's races, including its stakes, to Aqueduct.

A filly won the first-ever Belmont Stakes. Aptly named, “Ruthless” took home the winner's share of $2500 that year. Since then, only two other fillies have won the race – Tanya in 1905 and Rags to Riches in 2007.
